WHO WE ARE

Formed on December 7, 2006, the Aman Global Voices for Peace in the Home (Aman Network) is a network of organisations and individuals that aims to address and redress domestic violence against women and all those marginalised and exploited on the basis of gender, sexuality, abilities, socio-economic and religious background, in India and the Indian diaspora, at the national and global level.

The network believes in the strength of collective processes to bring about social change, and harnesses the power of over 160 member organisations from across India and a few organisations from Canada, the USA and the UK. The network provides a platform for member organisations and individuals to interact with each other and learn and grow from each other’s strategies and best practices.

Why a network of organisations working on domestic violence?

The need for a network of organisations working on domestic violence was strongly felt by Swayam, a Kolkata-based organisation working on this issue since 1995. There were numerous NGOs in India and abroad working in this field, but there was little connection between them to be able to tap into each other’s work when the need arose, or to learn from each other on their approaches to addressing domestic violence. In addition, there was the absence of a common philosophy, norms and ethics in the practices followed by these NGOs, which had the potential to affect the policy and societal response to domestic violence.

Swayam felt that building a network of organisations working on Domestic Violence at the national and international levels, particularly with South Asian countries, the UK and USA, could help bring a common understanding in the manner in which organisations worked with survivors of violence, could help create a referral network for survivors, and could help the civil society space put out a unified response to the issue of domestic violence.
The strategies that we follow are:

- To increase survivors ability to exercise choices, access opportunities and access justice using the services of state agencies and resources and expertise of network members.
- To share resources, including skills, information, knowledge, strategies, and best practices.
- To create awareness, build public opinion, support and action against domestic violence.
- To build alliances with like-minded organisations at the national, and international level to strengthen advocacy and support to domestic violence survivors.
- To make the state accountable to strengthen infrastructure and effectively implement laws and policies related to domestic violence and women's rights.

VISION

Aman Network envisages a world free from all forms of violence where the dignity and rights of all peoples are realized, and they have access to equal opportunities and justice.
